In some athletes, repetitive flexion and extension of the knee causes the distal iliotibial band to become irritated and inflamed resulting in diffuse lateral knee pain. The iliotibial band is a thick band of fascia that crosses the hip joint and extends distally to insert on the patella, tibia, and biceps femoris tendon. The most common symptom is lateral knee pain caused by inflammation of the distal portion of the iliotibial band. You can help by maintaining a healthy weight, stretching muscles before and after physical exercise and ensuring that your technique during sport is correct.Iliotibial band syndrome is a common knee injury. Can joint pain and swelling be prevented? In some cases, the doctor may want to look inside the joint with an arthroscope. You may need x-rays, blood tests and perhaps other scans. It’s a good idea to see your doctor if you have joint pain or swelling that starts for no clear reason and lasts for more than a few days, or if the joint is also red and warm. If the problem is caused by an infection, you may need antibiotics or surgery to drain the area.
